Now this is funny....



I am now back at work, on a ship. The servers that the ship's systems run through, back in Washington, have a pretty good website filter on them called "Squidguard." It's too good sometimes. It mostly blocks sites according to the wording associated with the site. For example: a guy was trying to look up "gaskets and seals" on an industrial supply website. Squidguard blocked the site. So, it's pretty loose in the interperetation department.



Anyway, I was trying to reply to a message sent to me by "Lust." (You see where this is going?) I type out the message and click to send. Squidguard shut me down. I'm thinking "What the hell!? It's never done that to VR before." Then I realized who I was sending the message to. "Lust." I love government paranoia. LOL



So, Lust, if you're reading this...I am not related to anyone named "Matt." Not to my knowledge.

Dennis the Me...Pain in the Ass

Hurrican Dennis is headed right for us, down here. So, we're packing up in the truck and heading west. This should be fun. Say a prayer or sacrifice a virgin for me or something. :-)



Update: Well, we went 2 and a half hours west into Baton Rouge to escape the clutches of the hurricane. About an hour after we left the news reported that the storm had taken a turn north and by now we know that it landed on Florida, yet again. We decided to keep on going, just in case, and spent the night in a Marriot Courtyard. Alex had fun. He got to go swimming and was the center of attention the whole time. It's hard not to be the center of attention when your 4 and in a hotel room with 3 adults. I think he colored more in the last 24 hours than he has in a month. He's on a coloring kick. Go figure.



The free high-speed internet didn't work. I'm rather pissed about that. I lugged my system all the way there for naught. Oh well. I survived 24 hours without the Rave.



All in all, hurricane Dennis had as much impact on us as, in my father's words, "a popcorn fart."

And the hits just keep on coming...

Every time I go to the little neighborhood store, I pick up a ring pop for Alex. When I got back to the house, this morning, I found my son trooping around the backyard in his new Spiderman shoes and wearing his backpack. I asked him what he was doing and he said "Exploring!" And looked at me as if to say, "Duh!"



So, instead of just giving him the ringpop, I decided to have a bit of fun with him. So, I took a bunch of pictures of things in the backyard, and printed them out. I made a map with pictures of the family on it, and sent him around to everyone. At each stop he had to do something before he could go to the next person. He had to count to 100, spell things, etc.



When he got to me, I gave him the first picture that I had taken and told him that there would be another picture, there.



Off he went! After about 10 minutes of running back and forth around the yard, he found his "treasure" in a potted plant on the back porch.



If you don't have kids you probably won't understand just how much fun it is for parent and child to do things like this. He was smiling every step of the way on the simple treasure hunt. It took me less than half an hour to set it up and it makes me think that I should do things like this for/with him all the time. I don't get to spend nearly as much time with him as I would like and every day I do is a joy.



Play with your kids, folks. Get up off the couch, or out from in front of the computer and have some fun. It's easy and the smiles you get are worth more than anything. You won't regret it.
